Trigun Badlands Rumble: A Sequel Movie to a 1998 Anime?

Hello everybody! This week for our anime madness I will be reviewing the feature film sequel to the 1998 anime Trigun, Trigun Badlands Rumble.

TRIGUN: BADLANDS RUMBLE

GENRE: Space/Western

DIRECTOR: Satoshi Nishimura

NUMBER OF EPISODES: One film

YEAR: 2010

COUNTRY: Japan

Trigun: Badlands Rumble takes place a non allotted time after the end of the original series. It doesn’t actually say whether it is before or after the original series, but it acknowledges the friendships between Vash, Wolfwood, and the insurance girls. The story follows the hunt for a notorious bank robber called Gasback. Vash falls into the mess after sparing Gasback’s life 20 years prior, and he tries to prevent the biggest and best robbery ever. The show features a new character called Amelia who is among all of the bounty hunters who are after the bounty on Gasback’s head.

Trigun: Badlands Rumble is an interesting sequel to the original series. It was awesome to see all of my favorite characters from the original series (Vash the Stampede, Nicholas Wolfwood, and the insurance girls) Amelia is awesome an enjoyable new character with a “dark” past, it is also hilarious to watch Vash try so very hard to win over Amelia’s heart. They also even poke fun at a few little Vash’s appearance (after 20 years he still looks the same) and his reputation. Some of the barflies  even think he is some idiot who is cosplaying as Vash after looking at a wanted poster.

The major drawback of the film is that it doesn’t really capture the same amount of the action/comedy balance hat the series was notable for. They were definitely trying too hard to be funny at some moments, but then in some moments it fits the Vash the Stampede character. Also Gasback is not a very interesting antagonist. There could have been so much more for his story but I felt they just shoe horned him in.

PROS:

  • Includes all original characters.
  • Beautiful animation.
  • The Humanoid Typhoon vs. Gasback.

CONS:

  • Unbalanced action/comedy.
  • Disappointing antagonist.
  • Insurance girls aren’t involved enough.

SCORE: 7.5 / 10
