Wristcutters A Love Story: Romantic Limbo

Hello everybody! Today’s review is about one of my favorite films concerning suicide, Wristcutters: A Love Story.

WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY

TITLE: Wristcutters: A Love Story

DIRECTOR: Goran Dukic

STARRING:  Patrick Fugit, Shannyn Sossamon, Shea Whigham, Leslie Bibb, Tom Waits

GENRE: Black Comedy, Romance

YEAR: 2006

COUNTRY: United States

Alright, so this is one of those films that you randomly watch on Netflix when you are bored out of your mind. You won’t regret it though, the film is quite hilarious and decently entertaining for an indie film overall.

Wristcutters A Love Story is an interesting tale about a love triangle in the afterlife. After Zia (Patrick Fugit) commits suicide, he realizes that Limbo is just a shittier version of his prior life. He gets a job at Kamikaze Pizza (love that name by the way) and meets his new best friend Eugene (his whole family committed suicide, even himself). He finds out from another deadee (trademarked by Dead Larry) that his ex-girlfriend Desiree also committed suicide a month after he did. Zia and Eugene go on a road trip to find her. On the way they pick up accidental overdoser Mikal, who is looking for the “people in charge”. Zia develops feelings for Mikal and still has feelings for Desiree, who will he choose?

Wristcutters: A Love Story is overall a very decent film for an independent black comedy. Those are the best black comedies right? The films has some reoccurring themes that are interesting and unique. Examples of these are the black hole underneath the seat in Eugene’s car, the headlights that can’t be fixed even by the best mechanic, and the fact that random miracles occur. Patrick Fugit and Shea Whigham portray drunken barfly buddies quite excellently as well.

My big issue with Wristcutters: A Love Story is that it contains too many of the typical romance cliches. For example, Zia and Mikal spend a night together next to the ocean, typical cliche. But they poke fun at this because when they wake up they are laying in piles of syringes/garbage/used condoms.  Some of the problems the characters have in this film are way too ridiculous to be included in the film.

PROS:

  • Interesting stance on suicide.
  • Desolate locations
  • Decent acting for main cast
  • Reoccurring motifs.

CONS:

  • Horrible secondary characters.
  • Too many cliches.

SCORE: 8 / 10

  1. A bit sad if you think about the subject material, but still has a shine of hope and happiness at the end, and made the black hole I have substituted for a heart move a bit. Good review.
