Alright, let me get right down and dirty with Outlast. I decided to check out this game after watching the Sourcefednerd crew play the game. If this game could make Meg Turney cry, I just have to check it out. I was trying to figure out the best way to describe the game, so check out the synopsis below:

“In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, has been operating in strict secrecy…until now. Acting on a tip from an inside source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.”

I am not normally into the survival horror genre (unless it is Resident Evil) but I have to say, I was a little scared playing Outlast. Don’t get me wrong, I love the survival horror genre, just haven’t found any that stick out or interest me too much. Anyways what I really like about Outlast is the ambience and the build-up. If Outlast accomplishes anything, it is that it makes you dread what is around the corner, and you don’t even want to risk running into any of the patients. That ominous fear of not being able to fight back is what gets me ever time.
Despite all of the praise that Outlast has received, the game is far from perfect. While the game’s graphics look cool, the “cinematography” for the game could have been done so much better. The story, while interesting at some parts, is far from original. After progressing through the first few hours of the game, it begins to become repetitive. You explore, you run, you hide, then you keep exploring. Repeat this for at least the next six to eight hours.
PROS:

  • Decent graphics.
  • Scare factor.
  • Decent play time.
  • Semi-unique characters.
CONS:

  • Unoriginal story.
  • Repetitive gameplay.
SCORE: 7.3 / 10
