John Wick (Reeves), who just lost his wife Helen (Moynahan) to cancer, receives a gift from her posthumously in the form of a puppy named Daisy, along with a letter from her saying she arranged for him to have it to help him cope with her demise. Initially indifferent to Daisy, he eventually connects to the puppy as they spend the day driving around in his vintage ’69 Mustang. He encounters a trio of Russian gang members at a gas station and their leader Iosef (Allen) insists on buying his car, but John refuses to sell and makes a snide remark at Iosef before leaving. The three follow John to his home, break in at night, and attack John, who watches defenselessly as they kill Daisy before stealing his car.

I actually really enjoyed John Wick except for the fact I have seen it twice already. John Wick is one of two films that I have fallen asleep watching in the theater in the last five years, the other being Green Zone. Some of my favorite scenes are when the action slows to a crawl, and it is all about the delivery and the dialogue. Not to mention that Keanu Reeves performed expertly, John Wick has to be one of his best films in years. Years I tell you years! John Wick has redeemed my faith in Keanu Reeves.

While I really enjoyed John Wick, the story was actually pretty boring. It makes sense why I fell asleep the first time. I also did not enjoy the murder of his dog. I mean come on! You have to kill the adorable beagle his wife left him to help cope with her death? I think you took that to the extreme and it was completely unnecessary. Well necessary and unnecessary. Character motivation is needed and is key in one of these films.

  • Action.
  • Delivery.
  • Dialogue.
  • Keanu Reeves performance.

  • Extreme character motivation.
  • Boring story.

SCORE: 7.7 / 10
