Hello everybody! For this week’s anime club we have the shoju anime 5 Centimeters Per Second.
5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND
CREATOR: Makato Shinkai
STARRING: Kenji Mizuhashi, Yoshimi Kondo, Satomi Hanamura
GENRE: Romantic Drama
Takaki and Akari are two classmates in elementary school. During their time together they have become close friends. Their relationship is tested when Akari moves to another city because of her parents’ jobs. Both of them struggle to keep their friendship alive, as time and distance slowly pulls them apart. When Takaki finds out that he is moving further away, he decides to visit Akari one last time.
5cm, at least how I will be shortening it for the sake of this review, is classified as a shoju anime. I don’t normally watch these kinds of anime, but at least lately it has been a trend. I loved the film, particularly the animation style. There was so much detail put into every single pixel that it almost seemed a few scenes were filmed not animated. The story is definitely well written into the three different segments, each its own well written story in itself.
What I wish 5cm would have done is focused on Akari instead of Takaki. Her story would have been much more interesting, as in relationships the woman’s side is more interesting. I would have liked to be introduced to the other man she will be marrying. I would have been more interested in seeing a segment on those two instead of segment 2.
- Animation stlyle.
- Superb shoju.
- Incredible detail.
- Wrong choice for main character.
- Segment 2.
SCORE: 8.5 / 10
