Hello everybody! For this week’s movie club we have the second entry in the Cornetto trilogy, Hot Fuzz.
DIRECTED: Edgar Wright
STARRING: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost
GENRE: Action Comedy Parody
COUNTRY: United Kingdom, France
Its been quite a while since I watched the Cornetto trilogy. For the next two weeks we will be watching the first two entries of the trilogy, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. We will not be watching The World’s End, as we already have a review for that one. Anyway lets start.
Top London cop, PC Nicholas Angel is good. Too good. And to stop the rest of his team looking bad, he is reassigned to the quiet town of Sandford. He is paired with Danny Butterman, who endlessly questions him on the action lifestyle. Everything seems quiet for Angel, until two actors are found decapitated. It is called an accident, but Angel isn’t going to accept that, especially when more and more people turn up dead. Angel and Danny clash with everyone, whilst trying to uncover the truth behind the mystery of the apparent “accidents”.
Time for our second entry in the Cornetto trilogy! Now the comedy duo of Pegg and Frost are police officers. While I initially thought that this was out of their wheel house, Pegg’s super cop to Frost’s bumbling idiotic role was perfect. I can’t leave out the actually interesting story, as I was actively trying to figure out who was murdering everyone. Also, I can’t forget the shootout towards the end if the film. God damn spectacular.
Initially, Hot Fuzz was the only Cornetto entry that I didn’t like. I mean at all. My gripes are still there, like the overuse of common tropes as well as uninteresting characters, but my second time through I took them with a grain of salt. Looking at the film from more of a satirical statement, I understand why it is funny. That’s why the score goes up in my book this time.
- Interesting story.
- Main cast performance.
- Overuse of common tropes.
- Uninteresting supporting characters.
