Two years ago, the angel apprentice Flonne was sent to the Netherworld to assassinate King Krichevskoy. However, when she arrived at the overlord’s castle, it was covered in flames. For the next two years, Flonne searched for her target, narrowing her search to a local dump. She found a coffin with Krichevskoy’s emblem on it and tried to carry out the assassination. However, it turned out that it was not Krichevskoy, but his son Laharl. Learning that his father has died, Laharl set out to claim the title of overlord for himself. Flonne and another demon by the name of Etna followed after him.
I decided to watch the Disgaea anime after playing through the first game of the series Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. The anime adaptation of the first game, can be easily summed up as a 12 episode shortcut or alternative to playing through a 30+ hour game. The characters are just as hilarious as they are in the game, and I would like to give a shout out to Etna and Flonne. They steal the show, by far surpassing Laharl in sheer hilariousness. While the events of the anime don’t follow the exact events of the game point by point, you get the gist of the main story.
Disgaea is definitely a low budget anime to jump on the success that the game series had accrued. The anime is poorly animated, and there isn’t really anything notable about it. What could be worse? How about poor voice acting? The only character that it would be alright to overact would be Laharl, but every single character is overacted. ruining the characters. I wouldn’t mind watching a sequel with better voice actors though.
- Shortcut to the first game.
- Hilarious dialogue.
- Hits main story points.
- Low budget.
- Poorly animated.
- Poor, poor, voice acting.
SCORE: 6.0 / 10
