tokyo_ghouls_01_1Tokyo has become a cruel and merciless city—a place where vicious creatures called “ghouls” exist alongside humans. The citizens of this once great metropolis live in constant fear of these bloodthirsty savages and their thirst for human flesh. However, the greatest threat these ghouls pose is their dangerous ability to masquerade as humans and blend in with society. Based on the best-selling supernatural horror manga by Sui Ishida, Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki, a shy, bookish college student, who is instantly drawn to Rize Kamishiro, an avid reader like himself. However, Rize is not exactly who she seems, and this unfortunate meeting pushes Kaneki into the dark depths of the ghouls’ inhuman world. In a twist of fate, Kaneki is saved by the enigmatic waitress Touka Kirishima, and thus begins his new, secret life as a half-ghoul/half-human who must find a way to integrate into both societies.

tokyo-ghoul-0103Tokyo Ghoul was a very interesting anime to say the least. Would I highly recommend it? Possibly for an interesting series to watch. This first season is much more on the psychological side, as it dwells on Kaneki’s initial transformation and trying to deal with his new abilities and personality. Kaneki also deals with a morality crisis, which brings up many interesting grey areas among the idea of morals. Anyway, enough of that. The animation is very professional and actually looks great on screen. I have to give props for this job, it is fantastic. Also, if you want thoroughly interesting characters, pick up Tokyo Ghoul.

While most of my gripes for Tokyo Ghoul are with the second season, I still have a few a few problems. I was lot a fan of the original voice actors, as I felt that they made Kaneki too innocent sounding. I understand that this is in line with his character during the first season, but it just turned me off. I would like the English voice actors who dubbed season two to take a crack on season one, since only season two is dubbed. Oh well.

PROS:

  • Interesting plot.
  • Interesting characters.
  • Blood and gore!
  • Keneki’s morality crisis.
  • Professional and crisp animaion.

CONS:

  • Voice acting choices.
  • Kaneki is too innocent.

SCORE: 8.5/10

  1. This series is due out in the UK soon. I want to watch even even though everyone says season two is bad.
