CREATED BY: Kenichi Shimizu

NO. OF EPISODES: 24 episodes

GENRE: Body Horror, Science Fiction

YEAR: 2014-2015

COUNTRY: Japan

9dsoghadsParasyte centers on a 17-year-old teen named Shinichi Izumi, who lives with his mother and father in a quiet neighborhood in Tokyo. One night, worm-like creatures called Parasites appear on Earth, taking over the brains of human hosts by entering through their ears or noses. One Parasite attempts to crawl into Shinichi’s ear while he sleeps, but fails as Shinichi is wearing headphones, and enters his body by burrowing into his arm instead. Because Shinichi was able to prevent Migi from travelling further up into his brain, both beings retain their separate intellect and personality. As the duo encounter other Parasites, they capitalize on their strange situation and gradually form a strong bond, working together to survive. This gives them an edge in battling other Parasites who frequently attack the pair upon realization that Shinichi’s human brain is still intact. Shinichi feels compelled to fight other Parasites, who devour humans as food, while enlisting Migi’s help.

Alright, its time for yet another highly requested review. Why do you keep giving me series like this? Parasyte the Maxim is Japan at its finest, at least in the mainstream. The amount of gore and blood is fantastic, giving audiences a rather interesting if yet stomach-churning experience. While initially I thought the series looked rather dated for a new series (2015), I soon realized it added a decent amount of charm. By far the best part about the series though is the design and personalities of each Parasyte. In this case, the weirder the better. How about a head that splits into multiple blades? Sounds good to me.miki

Unfortunately Parasyte the Maxim isn’t what I thought it would be. The story is rather lack-luster, even though I know many fans would disagree with that. The series also has a very over the top message regarding pollution and at many points it goes from tolerable to insanely preachy by the series end. We know, we don’t need that. Also, have you ever been interested in side plots? There are so many side plots that drop off the face of the earth by the season end that it is un-interesting.

PROS:

  • Body horror.
  • Blood and goor.
  • Dated animation creaes charm.
  • Parasyte design and personalities.

CONS:

  • Lack-luster stories.
  • In your face anti-pollution message.
  • Goodbye side plots!

SCORE: 6.0/10

  1. Shame that it wasn’t your cup of tea. I really enjoyed the series. It might be the best anime that I have watched this year.
