yuri-on-iceAfter suffering a crushing defeat during the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final and other failed showings at other skating competitions, Yuri Katsuki develops mixed feelings about ice skating and puts his career on hiatus, going to college in Detroit and later returning to his hometown of Hasetsu in Kyushu. He visits his childhood friend Yuko at an ice rink known as “Ice Castle Hasetsu” and perfectly mimics an advanced skating routine performed by famous Russian figure skater Victor Nikiforov, who is Yuri’s idol. When secretly recorded footage of Yuri’s performance is uploaded to the internet, it catches the attention of Victor, who travels to Kyushu and offers to coach Yuri and restart his figure skating career. Together with Victor, Yuri aims to win the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series as he battles against his rival, Yuri Plisetsky, a 15-year-old rising star skater from Russia.

Is everyone ready to take a spin on the ice? The most popular yaoi anime in the last few years, Yuri on Ice actually offers much more than what is on the surface. Sure there are adorably cute guys spinning and jumping on ice (Yurio is definitely eye candy… Why is he underage?), but there is a story beyond all of that. The competitive nature of figure skating is really shown, and it brings some great characters along with it. Not to mention the series has an amazing opening.

Now for the drawbacks. There is quite a bit of implied fan service on the ice. This obviously creates a stigma around watching a series such as this. But I don’t really care what they think. The only things I could think of is that the animation isn’t as crisp as it could be. Oh, and despite how much I love the cast of characters Yuri! Has brought forth, a few of the other skaters are rather one dimensional.

PROS:

  • Fantastic opening.
  • Animation style is fluid.
  • Decent dub vs sub.
  • Attractive and interesting characters.

CONS:

  • Too much implied fan service (we want actual fan service!)
  • One dimensional secondary skaters.

SCORE: 8.5 / 10
