GENRE: Fantasy, Comedy

COUNTRY: Japan

disgaea-anime4Two years ago, the angel apprentice Flonne was sent to the Netherworld to assassinate King Krichevskoy. However, when she arrived at the overlord’s castle, it was covered in flames. For the next two years, Flonne searched for her target, narrowing her search to a local dump. She found a coffin with Krichevskoy’s emblem on it and tried to carry out the assassination. However, it turned out that it was not Krichevskoy, but his son Laharl. Learning that his father has died, Laharl set out to claim the title of overlord for himself. Flonne and another demon by the name of Etna followed after him.

I decided to watch the Disgaea anime after playing through the first game of the series Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. The anime adaptation of the first game, can be easily summed up as a 12 episode shortcut or alternative to playing through a 30+ hour game. The characters are just as hilarious as they are in the game, and I would like to give a disgaea-anime5shout out to Etna and Flonne. They steal the show, by far surpassing Laharl in sheer hilariousness. While the events of the anime don’t follow the exact events of the game point by point, you get the gist of the main story.

Disgaea is definitely a low budget anime to jump on the success that the game series had accrued. The anime is poorly animated, and there isn’t really anything notable about it. What could be worse? How about poor voice acting? The only character that it would be alright to overact would be Laharl, but every single character is overacted. ruining the characters. I wouldn’t mind watching a sequel with better voice actors though.

PROS:

  • Shortcut to the first game.
  • Hilarious dialogue.
  • Hits main story points.

CONS:

  • Low budget.
  • Poorly animated.
  • Poor, poor, voice acting.

SCORE: 6.0 / 10

Anime Club: Bartender

Hello everyone! For this week’s anime club we have Bartender.

BARTENDER

CREATED BY: Masaki Watanabe

NO. OF EPISODES: 11

GENRE: Mixology

YEAR: 2006

COUNTRY: Japan

Bartender follows the nightlife of Ryū Sasakura, a bartending prodigy who is said to mix the best cocktails anyone has ever tasted. Sasakura bides his time in a bar named Eden Hall, hidden in a nook of the Ginza district in downtown Tokyo. It is said that normal people cannot simply find and enter Eden Hall, but they must be invited in maxresdefaultby the host. Over the course of the anime, various figures of high and low stature, all of whom share unusual troubles and heavy burdens, are “invited” into Eden Hall and are treated to Sasakura’s fine drinks, which, with guidance from the young bartender, lead the customers to reflect upon their lives and decide on a course of action to tackle their problems.

Bartender is an interesting anime to say the least. Who thought there would be an anime series about bartending and mixology? Well if there can be an anime about bread, I guess bartender can pass. Bartender is unique as there really is no general over arcing story, each episode is simple and only focuses on a single encounter at a time. Also each single episode features at least one recipe for the cocktail of the episode, many of which I had not thought of even since I am a bartender-customernewish bartender. One thing I would also like to point out is that hair animation!

Bartender was rather hard to get through, as unless they were talking about the alcohol in the episode I really wasn’t interested. Also I wish this series was dubbed, as I have a handful of voice actors in mind that would work spectacularly. I’m definitely not diving into the subbed vs dubbed debate, especially since the originally Japanese voice actors were perfect for this series. Just wish it was dubbed so I could compare.

PROS:

  • Mixology.
  • Sasakura character.
  • Alcohol recipes.

CONS:

  • Pacing.
  • Story Structure.

SCORE: 7.5 / 10

DIRECTED/CREATED BY: Tomokazu Tokoro, Hiroyuki Tanaka, Yasuhiro Matsumura, Kenichi Suzuki

NO. OF EPISODES: 10

GENRE: Action, Biopunk, Drama,Horror, Science fantasy

YEAR: 2006-2012

COUNTRY: Japan

745809-64In flashback, Integra is seen assuming leadership of the Hellsing organization as she resolves a conflict with her uncle with the help of the vampire Alucard. In present day, Alucard goes on a mission to the town of Cheddar to silence a vampiric priest who has been killing townspeople, and in the process must also present the young police girl Seras Victoria with the choice to either die or become a vampire. Also, Alucard battles a Vatican priest named Alexander Anderson after they are both sent to kill the same vampire in Northern Ireland.

Hellsing Ultimate is everything that the original Hellsing series should have been. Our favorite police girl Seras Victoria is much more awesome than she was in the original series, as she was an incredible pussy the first time around. Alucard is much more menacing and even cooler in Ultimate, showing off even more of his endless vampiric powers. If you want a series that will follow as close to the manga as you can get, check Hellsing Ultimate out.60106899

I honestly don’t have many gripes about Hellsing Ultimate this time. The English dub is far improved from its predecessor and it is a real thrill to watch. Be prepared to sit through an extra long session of Hellsing Ultimate. Fear Alucard! Nah, fear Seras Victoria and her dual-wielding cannons. Inhuman strength for the win.

PROS:

  •  Close to manga.
  • More gore.
  • Better characters.

CONS:

  •  Episode length.

SCORE: 9.0 / 10
