GENRE: Superhero

YEAR: 2015

COUNTRY: United States

Screen-Shot-2015-04-13-at-9.13.08-AMArmed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but maintain his full sized strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

So how is Marvel’s latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Actually not half bad. I definitely was wary of Paul Rudd as a superhero, since I don’t particularly like him as an actor. To my surprise though his cocky/ definitely not heroic attitude and performance actually fit the character quite nicely. His comedic chops also add a nice layer of comedy that Ant Man desperately needed.Ant-Man-7

Alright, here comes my biggest pet peeve. As an amateur filmmaker, I understand that each and every filmmaker has his own individual style. Since the original main driving force behind Ant Man, Edgar Wright, jumped ship during production, much of his style is still there. The new and final director,Peyton Reed, did the best he could. Unfortunately, I don’t think there styles matched very well and would have liked to see Edgar Wright’s finished version of Ant Man. Otherwise, it was a rather decent film. I haven’t been proud to say that about a Marvel film in quite a while.

PROS:

  • Main cast performance.
  • Supporting cast performance.
  • Dark comedy aspect.
  • Hilarious characters.

CONS:

  • Differing directorial styles.
  • EDGAR WRIGHT WHY DID YOU JUMP SHIP?

SCORE: 7.5 / 10

As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for a global adventure.

Avengers-Age-of-Ultron-Official-TrailerAlright Marvel, I decided that it was time to give you another chance. I have stayed away for the majority of your films since Iron Man 3with Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier being the few exceptions. Overall, Age of Ultron was definitely not disappointing, but was far from perfect. I enjoyed the fact they took some more time and making our favorite Avengers seem more like people instead of being superheroes. The action scenes were over the top as always, but that has become to be expected when you go into any Marvel movie. I would also like to praise James Spader’s performance as Ultron. He served as a mighty foe.stark

Like I said before, Age of Ultron is far from perfect. Overall though, I just wasn’t thrilled with what they did with Black Widow’s character. Scarlet Johansson’s performance was decent for what she actually was, but I feel that they could have done so much with her if they just treat her as one bad ass love interest. Also, could they have cut down on the final climactic scene a bit? Its just like an hour long of fighting.

PROS:

  • Over the top action.
  • Superheroes are more than humans.
  • James Spader’s performance.

CONS:

  • Black Widow.
  • Love Interest.
  • Hour long fight scene.

SCORE: 7.5 / 10

Runner Runner: The Online Gambling World

Hello everybody! Today we have a film about the online gambling world, Runner Runner.

RUNNER RUNNER

DIRECTOR: Brad Furman

STARRING: Justin Timberlake, Gemma Arterton, Anthony Mackie, Ben Affleck

GENRE: Crimer-thriller

YEAR: 2013

COUNTRY: United States

Princeton grad student Richie, believing he’s been swindled, travels to Costa Rica to confront online gambling tycoon Ivan Block. Richie is seduced by Block’s promise of immense wealth, until he learns the disturbing truth about his benefactor. When the FBI tries to coerce Richie to help bring down Block, Richie faces his biggest gamble ever: attempting to outmaneuver the two forces closing in on him.

Runner Runner caught my eye, as it is in the realm of what I call “gambling films”. A few films in this sub genre are 21, Rounders, and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. I thought that Justin Timberlake was decent in his role, when he rattled off the math he uses to prove cheating online gambling I actually believed he knew what he was talking about. Ben Affleck is hilarious in this as well, he was just the right amount of insane for his character to actually work.

I was disappointed that after the first act of Runner Runner, the film turns into any typical thriller. The plot is a simple crime thriller, which could have been changed so much to make it so much better. Also I have to include Gemma Arterton. Her performance was disappointing since she should have been on the same level as Affleck and Timberlake.

PROS:

  • Online gambling casino math.
  • Inside jokes.
  • Justin Timberlake performance.
  • Ben Affleck performance.

CONS:

  • Simple crime plot line.
  • Gemma Arterton performance.

SCORE: 7.2 / 10
